Deciding The Design Project
I came up with several of ideas of what project to pursue.
- Invitation or Novelty Card
- Stationary (replicate vintage stationary with modern day elements.)
- Book Cover (take a classic that was written in a certain time period but give the cover a different decade).
- Restaurant Menu (create a menu inspired by vintage menu styles for a local or chain restaurant).
Which one and Why?
Stationary after looking at lettersets from the 1940s. Interesting letter sets during the 1940s featured military troops and tanks or cheery home-fronts intended for melancholy soldiers.
Deciding The Decade
A large challenge of this project was choosing the period of history I wanted to replicate in my design. I approached this choice by researching historical events that happened during each specific decade. I looked for themes, styles, and attitudes that I like from specific times.
Which decade? Which year?
Using a random generator I chose a random year from 1960 to 1939 with the result 1943. My favorite decades range from the 40s to the 60s. Iconic and rich vintage details. Advances in technology and culture. Dramatic and classy women’s fashion and makeup.
